Who we are
Learners Test Canada is an independent study app for learner drivers preparing for a knowledge test in Canada. It is published by blue0orbit, the developer of Learners Test Canada (“we”, “us”). You can reach us by email at blue0orbit@gmail.com. We do not publish a mailing address: all contact is by email.
Person responsible for the protection of personal information: blue0orbit, blue0orbit@gmail.com. Québec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector requires us to name this person.
We are not affiliated with any government, ministry or licensing authority.
The short version
- You can use the app without an account. Your study progress then stays on your phone, and we never receive it.
- An account is optional. If you create one, with an email and password or with Google sign-in, we use your email address and an account identifier to sign you in. While you are signed in, your completed study sessions and saved questions for every province, including the progress already on your phone, are backed up automatically once your email address is confirmed. Signing out stops backups.
- “Help improve the app” shares usage statistics and crash reports through Google Firebase. On the setup screen, its box starts ticked, except if you choose Québec or your phone is in the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, where it starts unticked. You can untick it on that screen, and change it at any time in Profile › Help improve the app. If you skip setup, the Home screen asks you once, and nothing is sent before you have seen the choice. We don't attach your account, questions, answers or study records.
- Ads appear only for free users: a small banner on practice and exam result screens, and a rewarded video only when you choose one to unlock an extra full practice test. Ads are never personalised, and lifetime access removes all ads.
- We never sell or rent your personal information.
- Lifetime access is a one-time purchase through Google Play, not a subscription. We never see your payment details.
- You can export or erase your study data on your phone, and delete your account in the app or by email.
What we collect, and why
| Information | When | Why | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email address and account identifier (Google sign-in can also supply your name) | Only if you create an account or sign in | To sign you in, send the link that confirms your email address, and link your backed-up progress to you | Until you delete your account |
| Completed study sessions and saved questions (bookmarks), for every province (unfinished sessions stay on your phone and are not uploaded) | Automatically while you are signed in and your email address is confirmed (Google accounts are already confirmed): after each finished session, when the app opens (at most every 5 minutes) and when you change province. The progress already on your phone is included | To back up your progress and keep it across your phones | Until you delete your account. Signing out stops backups but keeps what is already stored |
| Lifetime purchase: Google Play purchase token and ownership status | Only if you buy lifetime access | To confirm and restore the purchase, and to turn off the free limits and ads | While the purchase is valid, as handled by Google Play |
| Problem reports: question ID, app version, language and your message | Only when you send one, by email, from a draft you check first | To fix questions | 24 months |
| Crash reports: device and app details and technical error information | Only while crash reports are on in “Help improve the app”, and never before you have seen that choice (saved reports may then be sent) | To fix crashes | Processed by Google Firebase Crashlytics under Google's terms (see service providers) |
| Usage statistics: device, app and session information and screen names | Only while usage statistics are on in “Help improve the app”, and never before you have seen that choice | To improve the app | Processed by Google Analytics for Firebase under Google's terms |
| Ad data: device identifiers (such as the advertising ID), IP address, ad interactions and diagnostics | Free users only: when a banner is shown on a result screen, or when you choose to watch a rewarded video. Never with lifetime access | To show the ad, prevent fraud and measure delivery. Ads are never personalised | Processed by Unity Ads or Google AdMob under their own policies (see ads) |
| Deletion marker: account identifier path, deletion state and time | When you delete an account | To stop another phone from restoring deleted records | Until removed manually, at most 12 months |
| Emails you send us | When you write to us | To answer you | As long as needed to answer and follow up |
Guests: if you don't create an account, your progress is stored only on your phone. We don't receive it. If you sign in later, the progress already on your phone joins your account and is backed up from then on.
Your data on this device: in Profile › Your data on this device, you can export your study data as a readable JSON file, or erase local progress. An exported file is saved where you choose, and the app no longer controls it.
We don't ask for your age, date of birth, contacts, photos, precise location or browsing history. The ad services can process your IP address, which can reveal an approximate location.
“Help improve the app”
This choice covers usage statistics (Google Analytics for Firebase) and crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics).
- On the setup screen, it is a box that starts ticked. It starts unticked if you choose Québec as your province, or if your phone is in the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland (the app checks the mobile network, then the SIM card, then the phone's region setting). You can untick it before you continue.
- If you skipped setup, the Home screen asks you once, with “No thanks” or “Turn it on”. Nothing is sent before you have seen this choice.
- In Profile › Help improve the app, you can turn usage statistics and crash reports on or off, separately, at any time (restart the app after changing crash reporting).
- We never attach your account, questions, answers or study records. Studying works the same either way.
Ads (free version only)
- Where: a small banner on practice and exam result screens, and an optional rewarded video that plays only when you choose it, to unlock one more full practice test that day.
- Who serves them: Unity Ads. Google AdMob serves them when Unity has no ad to show.
- Consent first: before any ad, Google's consent message (UMP) asks for your consent where the law requires it.
- Never personalised: every ad request is non-personalised (non-behavioural) and tagged for users under the age of consent, because learners can be minors. We don't collect your age or date of birth.
- What the app never sends: your account, questions, answers, scores and province are never attached to ad requests.
- What the ad services process: device identifiers (such as the advertising ID), IP address, ad interactions and diagnostics, to show ads, prevent fraud and measure delivery.
- Your choices: where the law requires that option, you can change your ad privacy choices at any time in Profile › Advertising privacy choices. You can always decline rewarded videos and keep practising. Lifetime access removes all ads.
Where your information is stored
Backed-up progress is stored in Google Cloud Firestore, in Montréal. That doesn't set where Google processes data for Authentication, Analytics or Crashlytics, or where Unity and Google process ad data; those services follow their own terms. Before we send personal information outside Québec, we assess whether it will be adequately protected, as Québec law requires.
Service providers
We use these providers to run the app. Each processes information under its own terms:
- Google Firebase: Authentication (sign-in), Cloud Firestore (backed-up progress), Crashlytics (crash reports) and Google Analytics for Firebase (usage statistics), the last two only as you choose in “Help improve the app”. We use no Cloud Functions. See Privacy and Security in Firebase.
- Unity Ads (Unity Technologies): ads for free users. The app doesn't attach your account, questions, answers, scores or province to ad requests. See Unity's privacy policy for game players and app users.
- Google AdMob: ads for free users when Unity has no ad to show. Google's consent message (User Messaging Platform) asks for consent where the law requires it. See Google's data disclosure for the AdMob SDK and how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
- Google Play: the lifetime purchase. Google Play's terms apply to your payment information; we never see your card details.
How Google handles information in general: Google Privacy Policy.
Your choices and rights
You can:
- use the app without an account;
- keep “Help improve the app” on or turn it off, and turn usage statistics and crash reports on or off, separately, in Profile › Help improve the app (restart the app after changing crash reporting);
- stop backups at any time by signing out (what is already stored stays in your account until you delete it);
- change your ad privacy choices in Profile › Advertising privacy choices, where the law requires that option;
- decline rewarded videos and keep practising for free, or remove all ads with lifetime access;
- export your study data as a JSON file, or erase local progress, in Profile › Your data on this device;
- delete your account and backed-up data in the app (Profile › Account › Delete account) or by email: see delete your account.
You also have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you;
- have it corrected;
- receive it in a structured, commonly used technological format (portability);
- withdraw your consent.
Email blue0orbit@gmail.com. We answer within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec (if you live in Québec) or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Young people
Learners can be young. We don't ask for your age or date of birth. Because the audience includes minors, every ad request is non-personalised and tagged for users under the age of consent. Studying as a guest never sends your study records; with “Help improve the app” turned off, no usage statistics or crash reports are sent either. To create an account you must be at least 14, or have a parent's or guardian's consent if you are younger. Québec law requires a parent's consent to collect personal information about a child under 14.
Security
- Information is encrypted in transit.
- Backed-up data is protected by security rules that let only you access your own records.
- We keep a register of confidentiality incidents, and we notify you and the authorities when the law requires it.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the app changes. If a change is significant, we tell you in the app before it applies. The date at the top of this page shows the current version.
