Manitoba Class 5 knowledge test: format and practice

What we know about Manitoba's learner's knowledge test, what isn't published, and how the app practises it.

Last updated:

Quick answer

In Manitoba, new drivers start with a Class 5 learner (5L) licence. The knowledge test is one computer-based test on traffic laws, safe driving and road signs, with a 30-minute limit, and it is not open-book. If you don't pass, you wait at least 7 days before a retest. The pages we checked don't give the number of questions or the pass mark.

How the app practises the Manitoba test

Manitoba · practice test in the app

Class 5 learner knowledge test

1 part30 minutes
  • Knowledge test (laws, safe driving and signs)20 questions · 17 to pass (83%) to be confirmed

The app's Manitoba practice test is one part, scored against the pass mark shown on the ticket. For practice you can keep the standard time, choose double time, or switch the timer off. Figures marked to be confirmed are the app's practice settings, not official figures. The app will follow the official format once a government source confirms it. Every result is a practice result only, never an official one.

What the Manitoba question bank covers

The Manitoba bank has 150 practice questions, written for Manitoba only from the Manitoba Driver's Handbook. Every question is in English and French, and every answer explains why it is right, why each wrong choice is wrong, and where the rule comes from in the handbook.

How to study for it

  1. Read the handbook first

The test is based on the Manitoba Driver's Handbook. Read the chapters on signs, rules of the road and your licence before you drill questions.

  2. Learn signs by shape and colour

Shape and colour tell you the type of sign before you can read it: an eight-sided red sign means stop, a diamond is a warning. Then learn each exact meaning.

  3. Fix your mistakes, not just your score

For each question you miss, read why your choice was wrong. The app brings it back in your plan so it sticks.

  4. Book when you pass consistently

Take full practice tests and book the real one when you pass them again and again, not once.

Questions about the Manitoba test

How many questions are on the Manitoba Class 5 knowledge test?

The official pages we checked don't say. Other websites give different figures, so we don't repeat them. Until the count is confirmed, the app's practice test has 20 questions with 17 needed to pass (83%), and labels both as to be confirmed.

Why does the app use 83%?

Because no official pass mark was found, the app uses the stricter of the figures reported elsewhere, so that practice doesn't under-prepare you. It will follow the official figure once it is confirmed.

Are the app's questions the ones on the Manitoba test?

No. They are original practice questions, written for Manitoba from the Manitoba Driver's Handbook. They teach the rules the test checks, but they are not the test, and the app is not connected to any government.

Can I practise in French?

Yes. Every question, explanation and source note is in English and French, and you can switch language at any time.
